All went to plan, nice gumbo 15/1/19

Post by STriplett1997 » Sat Jan 19, 2019 8:10 pm

G'day,

Sharing sessions from the start of the week on Mond & Tues.

Monday the wind was great all morning up until about 1pm. The plan was a bag of Whiting & bait collecting for the following morning. Hit a Whiting/Bait mark out in the deep for the beginning of the outgoing tide. Picked up 3 decent whiting and 5 slimey mackeral straight away. Things went quiet as the water flow picked up, and all of a sudden salmon were busting all around the boat.. And guess who forgot to bring a metal on board... . Quickly looking through only to find a small plastic with a very light jighead that i could get no casting distance with at all. With no ball sinker either, my only option was to attach it to the dropper loop in one of my paternosta rigs. They didnt go nuts for it but after a few attempts i managed to hook 2 and land 1. Better than none!.
Throughout the middle of the tide when the water was moving too quickly to fish for whiting in the deep, i hit middle spit. Picking up a few nice Whiting, but finding them a bit tricky on the banks and releasing a fair few smallish ones. I Went back to the same mark for the end of the run out, and sure enough i finished my bag of Whiting, & added some bonus bait of a Trevally + a couple yakkas and another slimey or two. Back into the marina and off to work i went.

Tuesday:
with the tides looking good, and good all week, it was a 4:30am start. Got down to the marina and launched at 5:30 am with the lines in the water by 6am just in time for the last two hours of the flood tide. Within 30 minutes i landed this lovely Gummy on fresh Slimey Mackeral. My favourite bait. Not my PB but happy to see some bigger models coming up through my area again with the warmer weather i think. Won't be long until the females do. I also lost a very big gummy/school shark last week on Friday. It took a whole Slimey Mackeral head. I didn't re adjust my line after casting it in at the begining of the tide when the water was still runnin a little slow. as it picked up, the boat moved back with the tide and re adjusted our position. The line/rig itself tangled up. about a 1minute 1/2 into the fight, it popped clean. Bit like a gummy with the vicious nods, screaming runs with head shakes. still bummed! but at least i got this one to compensate!

Another great report well done mate.
I’ve had a couple of sessions on the whiting but won’t get out again until after the long weekend apart from a quick squid session. Still eager to get offshore.

This spot is always consistent fished on the right tides, size class should get better in the next couple months, just going to keep hitting it hard
