As you've no doubt already told him, keep your rod bent into the fish the whole time, do not give the buggers one inch of slack or they're gone. With the bigger ones, walk them up the beach as you get them in the last breaker..pretty obvious once you've done it a few dozen times, but until you get on top of it, they can be deeply frustrating..

I think I've been misunderstood here... Pretty good idea of what I'm doing! By 33% of safe releases, I was referring to me dropping them in the final break! Accidental release.
I've kept all I've caught. Usually do. If I was to put a fish back, I'd make sure that it was capable of surviving, always have always will. The two minutes was taking time to unhook, run up beach, bleed, bag then race back the water.

Definitely agree, get rid of the treble hooks and go to single hook.
