Yeah, I was doing that. I made sure to not give them any slack line too but they still managed to jump off. It was only the big ones that caused problems, I was able to land the smaller ones easy enough

bigger hook for the bigger ones but you will miss a lot of the smaller ones swings and merry go rounds

you probably already do it
he means while fighting the fish, hold the rod parallel to the beach so the line forms a 90 degree angle to the rod, all while keeping the rod tip as close to the sand as possible

Ah yeah I get it now.

No I don't do that. Maybe I should. Will experiment next time I'm casting into a school.

Use sliding lure setup. You will land more.

The big ones jump, shake their heads and rip off thier lips.....bye bye fish.

yep thats right and you don't want to help them jump with a high rod tip when they are only 15 to 20 yards in front of you

4liters wrote:Had a reasonable morning at the Gunn today, ended up with 3 at 25-35cm and got half a dozen hookups of what felt like very solid fish but I kept losing them in the shore break. They seemed equally adept at spitting trebles and singles. All hookups were on either a red head Halco Outcast or a Busted 45.

Pretty much had the beach to myself (not counting the surfers) with only one bait fisho near the steps who was gone when I made my way back

When trying to land salmon through the break is it better to have the drag tighter or looser?

Went for a drive after that and ended up at Walkerville South, and then Cape Paterson. Both beaches seemed pretty shallow and featureless so I decided against staying into the night for a gummy session. Walkerville looks like an amazing place to take the yak some time though
You keep losing salmon in the wash 'cos you're a useless flog, lets not beat around the bush here.

Lol..
