Squiding In Apollo Bay???

Post by AdrianParisi » Thu Nov 29, 2018 11:31 am

First time poster, Long time follower.

Now with a little more experience I think I can help some. And some can still help me.

In apollo bay for work at the moment and often come down.
Haven't had too much luck fishing down here other than wrasse and banjos.
But no squid. Can people point me in the right direction.

Been trying off the peir next to the boat ramp. Very weedy. Not much use trying there unless high tide that's for sure. :water:

Couldn't find many recent posts.

Hey Adrian. I've just moved to Apollo Bay permanently. Hard to take. Like you I've been struggling to catch a squid off the same piers. I haven't even seen one yet. However, I'm getting my fishing kicks from spinning 4 salmon off either Marengo or Wild Dog beaches. It's pretty hot, at times, actually. Silver slices are the most reliable and high or low tides the time to try. And I like to eat them so thats good.
I also have been told that the odd KG is being caught off the boat ramp piers with grass whiting also. I watched a bloke berleying heavily off the boat ramp pier the other day and a lot of yakkas and mackeral were tearing around. They get lots of gars at times also. Surf fishing off the rocks into sandy holes using squid (bought so far) seems to be able to produce the odd excellent KG and pinkies (and wrasse etc also).
The locals tell me the squid are coming.Soon. The local squid guru is a bloke at the caravan park next to the river and footy oval by the name of Ian . He bags out alot and is happy to share his knowledge so I've been told.
Hope this helps.

Try late at night under the lights on the main pier.
You can see them in the shallows.

As BradP said, walking onto the main pier, the lower wooden section(it used to be wood when I used to fish here many moons ago!) on the right hand side at night and you will get onto them
