Land based fishing Portland
Hello folks
I am new to the site and hoping some locals can help me out with some info about land based fishing around Portland. I am going for a couple of days next week with some mates who are right at the novice end of novice fishermen. We will not have a boat and it would be good if we stood some chance of catching a fish. Advice on location, rigs and bait would be very welcome.
Cheers

Re: Land based fishing Portland
Welcome to the site,
This time of the year you start to see the breakwater start to fire up with catches of snapper and sharks becoming more common and also the chance of a kingfish. Salmon should also be around. In regards to tackle you could use anything from nine foot rods to surf gear using paternoster rigs and pilchards or squid for bait(you can also catch squid off the breakwater for a feed or bait) The beauty of this place that I have found in the past is that the pizza mob delivers and also pops into the bottlo on the way through to pick up a six pack for you
Good luck

Re: Land based fishing Portland
Fish the Lee breakwall. Squid to be had along the first part, (you'll see the weedbeds as you wander along).
Fish halfway onwards for kingies and snapper, (and sharks if that's your bag).
Float a squid strip or head under a balloon, put a snapper bait out on the bottom, pulley rig, paternoster, I don't think it really matters...
Any further questions, just ask.

Re: Land based fishing Portland
Love the land based options down at Portland, going there for a week in July myself. In summer like Carl said, the breakwater is productive. The little pier in the bay can be a lot of fun with bait fish and the odd whiting thrown in too.

Re: Land based fishing Portland
You got lee breakwall from half way to the end fish both sides.
Harbour side i usually get whiting and pinkies.
Bay side i use both patternoster set up and running sinker.
Evening night has been good for me.
Around 5ish try for squid (bay side).
There is a bait n tackle store opp the breakwall the guys there are really nice and can help out.
Or hou can travel out 20min from portland to cape bridgewater.

Bridgewater, I'd be very wary taking anyone, let alone novices down there. Renowned spot, but for fatalities as well as fish.(I presume You're talking about the Ocean Ledge)
