Good report mate! Its brought back memories.. I feel your pain..

If the reel doesn't hold much line have you thought of spooling it with braid and just have a topshot?

My biscayne and squall both have that, I've read that braid can dig in though and I was thinking of taking it off and going with straight mono

Take what you read off the internet with a grain of salt.. People have been using braid/Dacron on game reels for years.

Same as guys who deep sea fish.. over 500m of braid out and wound back on at very high drag settings with no problems.

Cheers, I guess the braid can stay on then

The only time you will face problems with the braid cutting in is if it's not spooled on tight, and then you have a fish go on a big run.

Just make sure when you initially spool it that you pack it on with tension

Cool, it should be sweet then. I put a plastic rod through the middle of the spool of braid and stood on either end of it to press the spool into the floor as I wound the line onto the reel.

I still think I'll get a heavier setup, I'm pretty settled on a fully rollered 80lb Fin Nor Offshore rod but haven't worked out which reel to get yet. The Squall 60 2 speed fits an absolute shitload of line on it (2.5km of 60lb braid/1.5km of 30lb mono :o_0: ) and is cheap compared to the equivalent sized but I wonder about how durable it will be.
