Late Portland report

Post by aussie_fisho » Wed Feb 01, 2017 11:26 am

Went down to Portland for the Australia Day weekend with good conditions expected. We arrived to pick up the boat and find that we already had an issue before we even started fishing, having been sitting away for nearly 8 months unused the boat has decided to have a few mechanical problems.

So basically our first two days consisted of us fixing the boat and driving back and forth to Hamilton for parts. In the mean time i did manage to sneak in a little fish off the breakwall every now and then, picked up a few nice whiting and some stinker salmon which were busting up every 30mins around the harbour.

Finally getting the boat fixed late afternoon we decided to go try for some crays, so we made our way to Lawrence rocks looking for good ground. Spent a good 2hrs diving and fighting the thick weed to finally get out bag of crays :super:.

The next morning we woke up bright and early to calm conditions and made our way to Julia reef, we proceeded to troll skirts and hard bodies till 8 when the weather chopped up and little and the fish went of the bite, we picked up 4 tuna within the hour, which we were pleased with, especially since me and my old man got our PB bluefins.(All fish were caught on small pink skirts and purple Rapala x raps).we came in early after having no more hits and the sun coming up and decided to have a go on the sharks later that night.

Headed out towards the north shore before dark armed with some fresh tuna baits. We spent the next 30mins bearlying and then had the boat surrounded by 12 or so sevengills, we had a ball catching 5-6 sharks on light gear, keeping the smallest of the lot around 50-60kg.

The next morning headed out once again on the tuna, where we picked up 1 small fish within first 5 mins and that was it for the day, i ended it with a quick spearfishing session off the lighthouse where I picked up a few bluethroat, pinkies, snook, a squid and some big sweep.

All round it was a good trip considering we spent 2 days without the boat being used.

Cheers Aussie

That's a fantastic seafood basket...looks like you paid for the trip (and a dozen after that!)

Had 2 tiagra 50s on 25kg full rollered rods out for the the hardbody lures and then used TLD 25s with 15kg rods to troll the skirts. And yes, the 40kg is the one pictured in the last pic. Not the best angle to show the size of it.

Good work.
