Fish Bonanza Weekend!

Post by TheGreatestGoat » Mon Jan 30, 2017 1:05 pm

Hey All,

Decided to take Friday off and head away for the weekend with some friends staying at a mates place in Warrnambool.

Plenty of tuna getting around off Portland and surrounds so thought we'd give it a go. Spoke to some peeps on here and seemed like Julia Reef was the go, which was supported by the guys at Portland Bait and Tackle.

Conditions were glassy on Friday so we put the boat in and headed out. Never had 3 people on my boat before and she was struggling pretty hard, decided to do a fuel check half way to julia to discover we'd already chewed through a 1/4 tank (only got a 23 litre). A quick bit of on the spot mental arithmetic said that things were not looking good so we decided to can it.

Pulled the boat in and headed Cape Bridgewater way, launched off the beach. Caught 20 whiting to 45cm, 3 decent flatties plus an array of salmon, mullet, pinkies and couta.

Up bright and early on Saturday and headed out with Dan from Salty Dog Charters off Port Fairy. Bit of a slow start to the day, then after a couple of hours hooked into a good size tuna. Couta hit the line and that was that. Not much doing so made a move to Julia Percy island.

Plenty of activity and got into 3 tuna before too long. When things slowed we headed back in closer off Port Fairy where we landed another 25kg tuna on lighter spin gear which was great fun, and dropped another fish. Great day on the water and would recommend Dan too anyone looking for a charter in the area.

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them
