Portland: Alternative if weather bad?

Post by davjak » Fri Aug 05, 2016 8:01 pm

Hi everyone.

Heading up and staying at Portland in November for a long weekend.
We are looking at fishing land-based from the break-wall but if the winds/swell is not conducive to fishing can anyone suggest other alternative option for a fish?
We'll happily drive an hour, perhaps inland or somewhere sheltered from the weather if needs be.
We just don't want to go and find we waste a day or 2 not fishing

Cheers

As 4liters mentioned you could try the Moyne river or the Yambuk surf beach another spot to try is the mouth of the Glenelg River at Nelson.

There's a whole bunch of good fishing there not just off the breakwall. The estuaries are literally full of fish, narrawong beach and the three rivers that spill into it is incredible. The breakwall faces north and the beaches face south, The harbour is sheltered from all but the very very worst weather.

There is almost always somewhere to fish landbased within about 10 mins. Geoff Wilson wrote an awesome article about it a while back but Fishnet seem to have taken it down.

Anywhere along the floating pontoons where the boat ramps are, you'll be able to get some squid. Use a 2.5 sized jig and try and work it abive the weed and you're in for a good **** of calamari.
