Fished Portland last year for Bluefin Tuna and it was awesome fun, we got some great fish. But to get those fish you basically have to be out at the shelf.

If you're targeting bluefin and albacore go towards the Horse Shoe. You will know you're in the right spot once you see on the sounder that the water is close to 1km deep. It can also take a good hour, hour and a half to get out there.

Obviously make sure your boat is capable to get out there and get back, i had mates who went out there and copt a freak wave that smashed through the boat and they ended up in the water for 2 hours until the coast guard found them and they lost there boat and gear.

what company have you booked with? there are a few who will still go in bad weather (captins descision)... tho there are alot who wont

my first trip down was canclled. as it was about 20 knotts. tho some charters still went out that day. next trip was no wind and dead flat. about 180 boats went out that day. next day was about 20knotts.. i fished with a diffrent company who went ut... there was only about 10 boats out that day.

You be mad to not take the boat. Still plenty of good fishing to be had in close. Launch at gentlemen hours and hit up the harbour or outside. Due to the land shape you are protected from a lot of different winds.

So the weather has changed again, and its looking pretty damn good, especially on Sunday (down to 1kt) We dont think we will go out too far, as we arent hugely experienced outside of the bays, and might do a bit of bottom bashing in the local area. Any tips on whats about in Winter apart from the Tuna? Hopefully the charter operator will be able to give us some tips, and we'll be dropping into compleat angler down there to burn a bit of money, so hopefully they will have some advice too.

So thanks for all the input guys, was a great weekend, between Dad and I we got a 8kg albacore and a 23kg bluefin. We took the boat out the next day for a bit of an explore, snagged 4 whiting to 45cm early, then tried a bit deeper for a snapper. landed about 50 odd fish, but nothing worth keeping apart from the whiting, probably should have chased them all morning, but was fun exploring new areas.

We will definitely head back down there again.
