Baron River Mouth - Bluff Road
Hi all,
I am camping with my brothers kids on the Barwon river mouth near Bluff Road this coming weekend.
I am reasonable experienced doing a lot of lure fishing for Bass in Ireland and the UK. However I have not fished in Australia for a 3 years now. The main focus is really to catch some fish regardless of size or species for the kids.
With this in mind any advice on correct methods would help (SP's, Plugs, versus bait, right time of the tide etc). I am not asking for specific marks or secrets but just some general guidance to increase chances of catching a few fish for some fun.
Thanks in advance.
Adam.

Fish off the bridge or the jetties and you should get on to a few fish - species you are likely to encounter include salmon, tommy rough, whiting, flathead, trevally, mullet, toadfish, and maybe the odd bream.
Best baits include pipis, squid, prawns and beach worms.
Best time is the first two hours of the incoming tide.
Use a rig like this - Try to have a relatively heavy sinker so the current doesn't take it - it gets ridiculously strong at times.
Most smaller soft plastics will catch you salmon, trevally, and toadfish.
If you need anymore help don't hesitate to ask

Thanks Trev. Much appreciated. One last question. Is it worth chucking a few soft plastics around, or stick to bait as you have suggested?

Plastics are well worth a go, I wrote at the end of the first post that smaller soft plastics are likely to give you salmon, toadfish and trevally.
Anything imitating a small, wriggling worm works best.

No problem, I edited the part about plastics after I posted, so you probably read it before I got the editing done.adama0087 wrote:Sorry Trev, I see you have mentioned soft plastics........

I've never been to Barwon Heads and not caught anything, so I think you're in with a pretty good chance.
Another spot worth checking out is the sheepwash - it's a bit further upriver but can produce good fish.

Paternoster rig also works well with circle hooks (google it if your not sure). I mainly use squid, prawns or bluebait (find this works best for the salmon). One of my fav locations is at the end of sheepwash road on river parade - you can park your car right next to the river - generally before and after high tide are the best times. You'll be sitting there for 3 hours with nothing and then all of a sudden it goes nuts for a few hours as the tide is turning.
I've caught trevally (40cm+), salmon and whiting - there are some very respectable sized fish and its rare that i go there and not hook up a few. Still waiting for that elusive Mulloway though.....
Good Luck!
