Offshore Barwon and Torquay

Post by Yota » Thu Aug 23, 2018 8:31 pm

Had an RDO today so up at 3:30, left home at 4:00 arrived at queenscliff ramp and launched by 6:45.
Unfortunately the canvas top on my ttop didn’t like the ride to queenscliff, I think a couple of the ties broke off and the rear end of the canvass was in shreds.
Anyway it was a cold but beautiful morning as I made my way out the Heads with lots of fish on the sounder in and just out the heads. I didn’t want to muck around in the heads.
Hit Barwon offshore and burleyed up.
Tally for the morning was
1 cuttlefish on a lazy rod I had unattended.
3 snapper 33, 45 and 50cm
I blue throat 45cm
1 7gill about 80cm
2 spikey perchy sort of gurnard things, very unattractive.

So after lunch I moved to Torquay offshore and only managed to get bitten clean off 3 times.

After that I made my way back to the heads and tried to troll up something without success. Again there were heaps of arches but they were too deep for the lure. If I had time I would have tried jigging but I wanted to hit the road before it got too late.
Flushed the motor at the ramp and hit the road by 4:15.
Back home at 6:15. Quick clean up and squirt the rods and trailer and the day is DONE.
I really enjoy being out on the water in the boat.
Taking home a feed is a bonus.
I kept the snapper and cuttlefish.

They are amazing creatures, that was my first one I've ever caught. In hindsight ( after cleaning this one) I think they don't really give much meat for the size of them. Next time I'll return it.
There was about 8 odd cars when I launched, and about 15 when I retrieved.
One tough nut on a jet ski was setting up to launch same time as me this morning, I asked if he was fishing, he said Na I'm going to Phillip island for a coffee.
I told him I thought I was the crazy one going out in the cold ,,,,,,

4litres yes wire trace, so do you use just 1 hook with wire trace ?
I always use a snelled pair with mono coz I'm mainly using whole squid or pillies.
Anyway, from memory I was in about 24m off Barwon and 32 off Torquay.

Thanks Lightningx

Cheers fellas

Ha ha yes thanks purple. As they say you've gotta make hay while the sun shines.
I just wish I could keep a decent job until I retire. The way manufacturing ( where I work ) is there's no chance. Same for a lot of industries I guess.

I’ve been using the ‘Geoff Wilson thresher rig’ or whatever it’s called. Search for that on YouTube and it should come up. Never hooked anything on it yet but I have no reason to think it wouldn’t work.
