Hey,
Went out to the locale channel armed with 3 rods.
Put 2 lines out, one with 40 lb braid as main line and another with 6 kilo braid.

Used corn and cheese as bait until I caught some shrimp and put some on the big rod

It’s was quite so I got up to look at a splash in the water maybe 14 meters away and then I hear a “thud”.

I turn around to see the big rod being pulled into the water and I run faster than the Sebb when he caught that snapper and grab the rod.

This is a big fish, I thought. I had the drag pretty high and it was pulling line out like nothing. I fought the fish for 8 mins before it made a splash on the surface, like someone jumped in the water.

After around 20 mins and more splashes I got it to the bank and got my first look at it.

“Oh sh*t it’s a giant!!!”
Before I could do anything it splashed again and pulled out a lot of line. This happened a few more times before I finally got it to the bank, went to put my fingers in its mouth to land it and…….









I heard a crack followed by the fish making one last splash before swimming away.

This was followed by around 5 minutes of swearing and throwing things before I calmed down enough to look at my rod.

The big mud marlen had snapped my rod rip off!!! This is the second huge fish I have lost at that spot and I don’t know what to do. My estimate was that the fish was around 115 cm and maybe 11 kilo.

Ended up catching a small carp afterwards.

I might start a fishing YouTube channel.

might be time to buy an ugly stick, tough to break them.

If your rod snapped its one of 3 things.
1. You are high sticking the rod when the fish wants to run
2. Even though you are saying the fish is taking line, the drag is too tight
3. Sh!t rod

You shouldnt need to use any more than 12 lb mono as mainline if the drag is set right. Dont worry about braid as it is not necessary to use it in this situation.

I suggest using a landing net next time. It can be a bit awkward reaching for a big fish with your bare hands. Easier to tire them out and then slip the net in behind them. Has never failed me, but then I've never gotten close to landing something 115cm long!

Bloody hell that first one sounds like a monster!

yeah, had my landing net with me, I need to get a bigger one though. its meant for smaller fish, not big ones. i tried to get it behind the tail but I went to lift it and it broke. it was a cheap one so I am not surprised.

might be number 3 then. I made sure not to high stick the rod (after seeing what robbiefishing did on a big carp. the ceramic on the guides was cracked so I had to take the ceramic out.
