First Grayling
About a month or so ago I posted about one of my sons mates catching a Grayling. At that time I had never caught one.
All that changed today.
I had my first one today and then quite a few after that. The river was thick with them. Add to that a few lively Tupong and some rat carp it was a brilliant morning.
They're not big fish but very, very pretty.

That's huge for a grayling, the ones we used to get where as big as your middle finger.

Re: First Grayling
Do grayling swim in schools? I think I saw some in the Toorongo River last year while I was fly fishing, moving in a school of 6-8 fish. The water was fairly discoloured but they had the same shape and size as the fish in the picture. Initially I thought they were small rainbows but their behaviour was different to trout. They would come up and mouth a dry fly on the surface but not take it and unlike trout they wouldn't get skittish and disappear after attempts to hook them.

To be honest I'm not really sure but from what I've read, grayling are a schooling fish.pwalnuts wrote:Do grayling swim in schools? The species are protected but if they insist on scoffing a bait intended for other fish it's a lost cause trying not to catch them. All the fish caught yesterday were returned to the water. The fish yesterday were all caught on worms.
Once my worms ran out the grayling bites stopped.
