Alpine Trout

Found myself up in Victoria's Alpine National Park last weekend. Camped in our regular spot about a 2 hour walk in upstream from the car.

On recent trips I hadn't seen much in the way of fish, and with last summer being so dry and being told that this stream had all but dried up, I didn't pack any fishing rods. Boy was that a mistake!

Water conditions were such that the trout were easily spotted but there was also enough water going down that they were feeding very actively. And they were there in numbers and in size I have never encountered in many years venturing up this creek.

This one we estimated to be almost 3lb, and had a mate the same size in the same pool, yet was not the biggest we saw.

Trout around the 1 pound mark were common:

Consensus was the wet winter has been good for the fish.
Personally I think we're seeing some fish come up from the dams to spawn and deciding that 'river life' isn't such a bad idea.....

Great report and pic's, I couldn't go camping near a river without having my trout rods with me.. It's amazing how they survive some time through some off the toughest conditions too. Bet you don't leave the rod home next time.. Beautiful area where you camped and some qualtiy trout in the river, I would have just sat there and cried..

I bet the bush smelt fantastic first thing in the morning.

It just shows that you can find good trout in our streams if you make the effort to get away from the crowds.

The high country is probably the last place I'd be forgetting to bring the trout gear along to. Even the tiny little aquaducts on the plateau are thick with them and the deeper pools further down the mountains would have to have some decent fish in them

It did. Oddly enough tho the biggest fish we saw was sighted from the road bridge!?

This was further down and yes they did. This stream starts with very difficult to access waterfalls, vaguely remember bush bashing into them with a group in the 90s.
