Tinca is spot on. If carp are present that is usually to the demise of tench.

When tench spawn their eggs adhere to the stems of water weed. The carp eat the eggs. Also, as we all know the carps feeding habits of vigorously grubbing in the mud and silt hoover up a lot of the tench's natural food. The tench eggs that do survive and hatch starve to death.
