First Tench Of The Spring

Post by Whiskers » Tue Oct 25, 2016 1:40 pm

Paid an visit to one of my favourite tench spots this morning.

As always, tench fishing over winter shuts down but now, with a bit of warmer weather, today seemed like a good day to see if any tench were out and about.

It was a slow start but eventually a few feeding bubbles showed next to the weed beds.

Not long afterwards the first tench of the season was in the net.

She was a big fat mamma, just a bit shy of 50cm and almost as round. Getting on to almost 5lbs.

Do you catch and release these things or are they good eating ? I never hear of many people targeting them.

I always catch and release them.

I believe that the European nations have recipes for them but I've never tried to eat one. Many hundreds of years ago they were farmed for food in many European countries.

They are not too common here in Australia but as a kid growing up in the UK, tench fishing was a highly pursued pastime. After 60 odd years of fishing for them the magic is still there.

Thx, I remember having some very small ones in a fish tank when I was a little tacker, I don't recall how I got them in my possession though ?

that's a great tench, one of the bigger ones i've seen reported. are they similar to carp in their feeding habit or do you target them differently?

Would love to catch one that big! They are really nice fish. I used to catch them in a small suburban dam in the southeast of melb but never this big. Was this a river or lake?

When I was a kid a mate's parents used to fatten them up in this swimming pool (a clark rubber, above ground model). :fish22:
