Yeah, getting zapped was my own fault. I knew I was playing with fire and I got burnt. A worm popped his head up and I grabbed at him too soon so he tucked his head back in out of reach. I moved the probe in closer to him (only a few inches away) and the little fella still wouldn't come up so I started digging in under him with my finger and then zappo. As long as I was at least 6 inches away I didn't seem to get any tickles from the electricity but obviously I was pushing my luck. Turning off the unit before plucking around is a much smarter way to go about things. Funny thing is I did actually get ahold of the worm before I got shocked but my reflexive jerk away with my arm sent the poor little fella about 15 feet through the air and into the garden, never to be seen again....

Just a quick update to show phases 2 and 3 of my likely last river trout this season.

My "Aldi special" smoking away loaded with Apple wood, works an absolute treat for holding a constant temperature over long periods.

The smoked trout!

Phase 4 will involve pumpernickel bread, cream cheese and capers after the trout has spent a night to cool down and let the fats solidify and flavours settle. No photos sorry so you'll have to use your imagination and believe me when I say it's the best way to eat smoked trout!

And just in case anyone is interested, while the smoker was out....
I did some mussles (jars yet to be filled with oil)

and chicken drum sticks.

I think it was on this forum I saw others using smokers so thought they might be interested. I also do bacons (if you haven't tried home smoked bacon, you haven't had bacon), salmon, speck, pork loin, hams, pastrami, cabana, others I can't think of.

So the Aldi smoker is pretty good? I might think about getting one if I see them come on sale again.

Yeah, I highly rate it for the price and even just as a smoker in general. I have made many smokers and used everything from charcoal bbqs, beer kegs and old fridges. They all worked but for ease of use, control and cost then this is My go to. I temporarily converted it to a digital temperature controlled electric element which also worked well but went back to gas. Not as fancy but still works great and the gas gets to temp faster.

Great read skronkman! Nice bow too!
Might have to give this bait gathering method a crack myself one of these days. Sounds like a buzz! I'm curious, how far apart to you place the prongs, and how deep do you punch them into the soil?

This looks like a pretty handy video if anyone wants to have a crack at an electric worm catcher
