I use a really light jighead 1/32 or 1/40 with a size 4 or 6 hook. You really need a small hook, the shank on bigger hooks are too long for the body if the plastic. In terms of action, pretty much a standard SP retrieve, cast upstream and let it sink then flick it up to imitate a small yabby or cray.
I personally haven't had a huge amount of success with them, but haven't used them a lot. I've seen some people do really well on them though. I haven't used them in lakes but couldn't see why they wouldn't work.
