Day on the Goulburn
Hi fellas, Just a report from today walking the Goulburn.
Started off at Gilmores bridge working our way down river. I started off using a CD-3 in the perch pattern while my old man was using scrubbies and crickets. We usually do this to find what they are biting best on.
It was a tough day with the river being very low with little flow. It was very calm through out most of the day though which was nice. Changed lures heaps over the day but finished off using a small gold Celta with black and green stripes on the blade because most of the river was very shallow.
On this stretch of water (approx. 5-6kms) I usually see heaps of fish, get a few follows and end up catching a few but today we didn't see anything at all until we got to the first deep hole which I call the pump. Saw a few fish rise here but after casting into the pool for a while I didn't even get a follow. Nor did my old man on bait.
At the end of the walk there is another big area of water which is a bit deeper with snags and grass beds. We saw a few fish rise again and after persisting with the celta I hooked up. Ended up landing a nice little brown (35cm)
After an hour or more casting and having a bit of a rest we decided to head back before it started to rain.
All in all, a good day on the river.
Cheers, Anth

Thanks mate. Even if I didn't, I love walking the rivers. I completely forget about everything. Getting a fish is just a bonus.

That's a great looking stretch of river, very scenic too.. Shame the fish weren't on today.
Just a question, why didn't you walk downstream then work your way back up the river..
cheers

I'm too keen to get a lure in! the way i work the water it doesn't really matter. I usually walk a bit off the edge of the river and attack the pools and runs from behind anyway. And the last deep pool is usually better later in the day because it gets shade. so if i walk all the way down then work my way back up ill miss fishing that pool at the end of the day.
In saying this i've never fished the deep pool first thing.. i might try it next time and report my findings.
