Carp for bait?

Post by Finnigan » Thu May 28, 2015 2:55 pm

Is it illegal to use carp for bait in saltwater? I know it's illegal to put them in saltwater alive but i don't see anything about using fillets or whatnot for bait on the fisheries website.

Does anyone know?

Cheers.

You can use them for bait in any waters...just make sure the carp is dead! More so in fresh water. :) The best way to do this is cut a fillet from it. Or if a small carp remove its head. Only thing you may want to be careful with is if the carp has eggs...make sure they don't find their way into the waterway (fresh water).

Knock yourself out! :) Only thing to keep in mind is you can not legally transport them alive. You will need to kill them where you catch them.

Hi Jim
Going by Fisheries eggs from dead Carp can't be fertilised. I think there was a thread relating to it some time back

Yeah...I know!!! I just add it in there cos someone will have a hissy fit if I don't! :) I release all carp I catch! :Dribble: Technically they are still in one piece, however, they will not go far...normally just with the effect of gravity! Thanks for posting that bit of info Kev...good to see someone is on the ball!
cheers

I've heard of them being used as cray bait in saltwater.

I can't stand carp :puke:
So do you all reckon they're great bait for gummies?
Apart from fertiliser what else are they good for?

I'ts great catching them on light gear, most put up a bit of a fight. Better still introducing them to the Priest I keep in my tackle box.

They will work as bait for shrimp, yabby's & cray's in fresh water.I've also heard of them, but have no proof, they are a good substitute for a claybird.
