St leonards land based snapper alive and well ..

Post by hornet » Wed Feb 05, 2014 8:13 pm

Hi guy's I have been fishing st Leonards rock wall for the last 4 months and after many 1 and 1.2 kg snapper I nailed a 3 kg sucker !

on the same night I got slammed on another surf rod which was dragged along the planks for 10 feet before I caught up with it !

needless to say the line parted when the line hit the hand rail, I would say it was considerably larger than the 3 kg specimen earlier

the preferred bait I have found over the last few trips is half a squid head, best time is when the weekend warriors have left for the night ...cheers :)

Great fish mate!!!!
The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad

That rock wall is in the perfect location between portarlington and queenscliff , looking at google earth the headland sticks out in some great water, I have lost count of the huge whiting I catch off the wall waiting for the snapper run ! squid beaten with a kitchen mallet and circle hooks in number 4 or 6 are the go, some nights the whiting hit as hard as the 1 kg snapper !

Ever since I have targeted one spot and fished it consistently you get a feel for the area and have better luck " wiring " the place, you get to know which part of the pier produces what ..

I'm used to moving around trying different piers but concentrating in one place you soon learn what works and what doesn't

and whiting do feed at all hours of the night and are in general bigger, I had them come on at 2 am one morning and bagged out in 2 hours

they ranged from 30 to 40 cm, absolute beasts !
