Queenscliff Flatties
Went for a bit of a fish with the old man a couple of nights ago, off a beach just near queenscliff, fishing the incoming tide in less than 1m of water we managed to get into a couple of solid flathead.
All were caught on squid, paternoster rigs with about 2/0 hooks on.
The largest went 65cm, was a bit of a brick to bring in on light gear.

Great catch! Flatties change colour depending on their environment, these ones off the sand appear lighter in colour but I believe they are southern bluespots. Bigger one would've gone near 2 kilos.

They're around, but as this report states, the bigger models tend to stay shallow.

Re: Queenscliff Flatties
I've caught them off the beach like this before, but we we're literally casting only about 20m off the beach and into bugger all water. We started at the first influx of tide and fished for a couple of hours. It was pretty obvious when they were going to arrive as there wasn't quite enough water early, but once the water started filling up the little gutter they showed up.
There was a little sandbank not too far off the beach and we cast just on our side of it and let the bait wash around a bit. When they latched on, they gave a few big headshakes and then settled back down onto the sand (which made them hard to bring in as they just wanted to sit on the bottom in the shallow water and we struggled to skull drag them).
I'm sure that the location we were fishing is ideal for SP's as well so the next time I head back there I'm going to walk the beach and try to get into some that way.
