Big sambo from Portarlington pier this morning
My son and I got up at 4am to break the run of donuts at a new spot for us.
The wind was very light offshore and tide rising. We fished near the end and were using soft plastics (Gulp turtleback worms in disco prawn color).
20 minutes in, I had a good take and thought I'd hooked a snapper by the power of the first run on 6lb braid and trace. The fisho next to us was kind enough to wind in his rigs when the sambo went running along the rockwall.
My son did a great job of netting the sambo on slippery rocks. Only a tiny flathead and little sambo after that and we packed it in by 8am.
63 cm and a new pb

Cheers. We were fishing off the rocks with a berley pot out with pellets and tuna oil in it. Casting ad far as we could, about 25 metres tops and the sambo would have hit it about 20 metres out just off the bottom after I did a lift.
Was nice to hear the Stradic scream, I can tell ya!

Nice Sambo! That would have been heaps of fun on 6lb gear, well done.

Yeah, I thought it was a snapper to start with before it started leaping all over the place. Took about 10 minutes to land and had to move along the rocks and duck under the fisho's line when it decided to go sideways. A bit dodgy when they were wet from the rain and holding the rod in one hand but alls well that ends well. Loads of fun! My trace was frayed though and was lucky as he had swallowed it.
