St Leonards Pier - Calamari 31/12/2022

Post by Andrews » Sun Jan 01, 2023 8:19 am

Hey everyone,

Sharing a quick session chasing some calamari for a New Years BBQ, didn't expect much knowing the fishing pressure on the pier at the moment.
Water was also very dirty the day before.

Fished:
7:30 - 10.00am
Pretty much glass out, zero wind
Clear water, overcast foggy conditions
Run in / slack/ out tide

Pier actually wasn't super packed.

I wanted to fish with a darker natural pattern, this yakka coloured jig has been pretty successful recently and today was no expectation.
All the squid were very hesitant, easily spooked and just wouldn't commit to the striking - so letting the jigs sit at rest was the best way to hookup.

Managed five squid, three quite small models - maybe saw another 3 caught. Nothing huge.

Few action shots, we've got the follower & the classic squid lift.

Top effort :tu: I've been trying for squid around Mordialloc (yak) since Sept... Nothing to brag about, suspect the rains and dredging has something to do with this. Although water's been clear last week or so.

@Kenle, cheers mate! You can't beat the fresh stuff that's for sure!

@Sneaky, cheers! Yeah, I feel like we've had a tough run with the weather. I know down here we've been having murky water one day, clean the next and the inconsistency ha kept the squid deeper.

@Lightningx, thanks! Yeah always a blast chasing these.
