Trevally Fishing The Barwon River and Queenscliff

Post by Jaka474 » Wed Oct 31, 2012 7:42 pm

Hey, I was just wondering what rigs, baits, plastics, lures and techniques work best to catch Trevally's in the Barwon River or Queenscliff Harbour? Ive tried to catch my first Trevally all year now but i just keep catching salmons! I really enjoy using the Gulp Turtleback worms but the salmon love them too. :shocker: Any tips would be helpful.
Cheers :gone:

clear or lightly colored small lures will give you better results

Hi Jaka,
To catch Trevally in Barwon River, you use a paternoster rig with a heavy star sinker & 2 x No.4 baitholder hooks.
Use chicken breast as bait. Cut the chicken up in small baitsize pieces & marinate with curry powder.

I caught a few in May but have not try since b/c I'm after breams & ludericks at the moment.
The water is not crystal clear atm so maybe not too many trevallys about.

Curry chicken worked for me, I swear by it.
Curry powder stains the chicken orange/yellow colour & this colour attracts the trevally, NOT the taste, so buy the cheap curry powder.
Also use chicken breast, not the thigh (meat too tough). Trevally has small soft mouth, so don't put a big chunk of chicken on the hooks. 1cm cube is ok. Good luck mate. Hope to hear good report soon.

I got 4 down there last week upto 36cm, but those roughys are so painful. Pichard is always better than chicken, more reliable.
