St Leonards Labor day long w/end

Post by Trumpeter » Mon Mar 14, 2016 9:49 pm

Hi All

Spent a lovely long weekend down at our van and went out Saturday morning before sun-up with a Gummy in mind. Armed with squid and KGW heads I had one screaming run then got promptly bitten off. After that it was just Banjo after Banjo, so I moved back in closer to shore and tried in 5m for some whiting. Within seconds of the first baits dropping to the bottom the rod buckled over and I had a really good 42cm 'ting on, it fought strangely though and to my surprise I actually had a double header with a very nice Flatty. After that I got a few more KGW and then the Pinkie army arrived, I caught about 2 dozen around 25-27cm and used up all my bait so I pulled the pick and drifted for Squid. I got to try out my new, cheapy, Sure Catch Ink Vader rod for the first time, with a 2500 Daiwa Exceler and 12lb braid and it was great fun. I could feel every pulse and surge of the squid clearly and using a white Sephia picked up 5 in no time. Unfortunately there was a fatality though, I found the tip snapped off my Squid Wrangler and I hadn't even given it a good a good work out yet, don't even know how I did it so I'm glad it was only 50 odd bucks. So then with the thought of the icy-cold Stella's I had waiting in the fridge and enough fresh seafood for a feast for the family that night I decided to go back in before the ramp got too chaotic.
