portarlington pier today

Post by Nude up » Thu May 21, 2015 8:11 pm

I had to go to portarlington today with the misses to pick up some stuff and I was amazed they have built a new pier. Its all part of the safe harbour project new pier remove the old one then extend the existing breakwall north then east then build another breakwall on the east side to the shore.
The artificial reef seems to be working as well, there was about 6 people fishing and they were pulling in salmon left right and centre running sinker paternoster lure they were taking everything not huge fish but the fishos were having a ball and the grandkids were happy to see all the fish being caught

I spoke to one of the locals when I was there last and he said the development was part of a plan to have a ferry run between there and docklands. Given it probably takes close to 2hrs to drive from Portarlington to the CBD in peak hour it is probably a feasible idea. Dunno how it would go in bad weather, imagine all the CEOs rocking up to work with chunks all over their Italian wool suits because they all got sea sick in a big blow lol.

I didn't realise that new concrete section was part of a much larger extension of the break wall, it'll end up being a pretty good spot for fishing when it is all done.

I read this

"""Mr Hodgett also inspected the progress of the $270,000 works on the St Leonards pier during his visit to the Bellarine Peninsula on Wednesday."""

Who's been to St leonards lately ? what works has begun ??

Works underway by Dynamic Contractors Pty Ltd include:

removal of degraded concrete; removal of rust; replacement and treatment of steel reinforcement; and rebuilding the concrete surface.

Additional works to upgrade the public lighting is also underway and due for completion this month.
Sounds about right for the amount of money they're talking about. I'd imagine if they were extending anything or fixing the rock wall it'd run into the millions.

It will be interesting I did hear they want to run the ferry to werribee as well I might have to buy my retirement home soon I reckon the prices will skyrocket if it happens. Having travelled on the sydney harbour ferries they run in all weather it could be a good concern.
It takes me 1.5 hours from portarlington to the airport on top of my 12.5 hour day it makes 15.5 I can't do it its ok one way.
I did have a house in portarlington and we are looking for another but its hard to find one that has a garage for a 6.5mt boat I will probably have to build
