Portarlington Jetty 21/01/15

Post by 4liters » Wed Jan 21, 2015 7:18 pm

Went out to Portarlington today with a mate, fishing off the jetty. Only caught a couple of undersized whiting and a bunch of toadfish. However someone caught a 30cm+ leatherjacket close to the jetty and apparently some kid got a 50cm snapper. Banana prawns as bait got a lot of nibbles, no interest whatsoever in the baby octopus I bought from woolies though (I'd never heard of anyone using it as bait before but I figured it'd be similar to squid - the fish had other ideas though).

Drank six beers and didn't get overly sunburnt.

+A would go again.

I know that I would much rather a few beers down at the pier than working all day, regardless of the catch! At least you hada great day ^_^

Was a great day to be out I thought the fishing had picked up there since the artificial reef has been put in

It probably has, the closest reefs are only 40m from the breakwall and I was casting right in amongst it until we changed spots. This was only my second time out fishing since I was a kid so I would not be at all surprised if someone who actually knows what they are doing could get a decent haul down that way. Still the fact that whiting (even if they were <25cm) were having a crack gives me confidence that I'm doing something right.

Yeah at least there are some perks to being a uni student to make up for being broke all the time. I'll be looking to head somewhere out a couple of times next week too, the high tide is coinciding with sunset so hopefully that will improve my chances.

You have a good attitude. It's more about fishin' than catchin'. A feed once in a while is a bonus. Keep trying. You'll get there.
