Portarlington Trip - First Squid Ever

Post by sarsi » Tue Sep 23, 2014 2:27 pm

Fishing off Portarlington pier last Saturday, I finally caught my very first squid ever :super:

It was a very quiet day - I started at around 2:30pm and never had my first bite until around 7:30 (a tiny flathead). I had 3 rods out with squid, chicken and bluebait but there was simply no fish biting. I tried trolling with SP and metal lure hoping to get even a small salmon but no luck either. Around 8:00PM I switched to squid jig and lo and behold - a squid! I was so excited I forgot to put a ruler next to it :) Left at around 8:45 as it was getting too late.

Good job mate! Not only delicious but the best bait for lots of things. Next time try to flick your jig around first, and use the squid you inevitably get first cast as a fresh bait. Fresh bait makes a huuuuuge difference to your success rate.

Good work I personally have never caught a squid off the pier at portarlington but plenty around the area in a boat looks a fat sucker

Nice squid! Now that you've got one you should start getting the hang of it...
