Those days would have hurt the stocks. I used to see boats coming in with so many elephants on board the boat floor could hardly be seen. Cricket score numbers, hundreds at a time. What the hell anyone would do with that much fish is beyond me, but they were the "kill n' grill" days where nothing went back. Thankfully Rexy got involved, which was the start of a fishing revolution. Luckily there's much more general fishing awareness nowadays, along with bag/size limits helping manage fish stocks. How times change...
