Surface lures for cod and bass in cooler months?
To the experienced cod & bass fishos, I have been wondering this for a while. Surface lures for cod and bass in cooler months.
I get the logic when in hot days and the insects are active, the top water can have abundant terrestrial food source such as cicada fallen off a tree. So what happen in cooler months? Does murray cod still hit surface lures in low light condition? And aussie bass too?
Also, in either hot/cold weather, do they (bass and cod) hit surface lures in deep water area? Say fishing near the rockwall of a dam, the water can drop straight to 10-20 metres.
Or I should be looking for them in the shallows? And how shallow?

many people catch surface cod in winter. check out the ebbtide boys on youtube and you'll see they get a few big ones off the surface in winter. couldn't tell you about bass because have never targeted them or know much about them. Cheers Matari

Thanks matari, just watched the one they caught a cod on surface in winter. Doesn't really teach/explain the technique etc though.
I like educational fishing videos like the ones by AFN and Lee Rayner's Fishing Edge. They explain and teach so much. Get to learn a lot.

Id recommend Robbie's Fishing (channel) on youtube - based in Wangaratta, tons of cod videos that are really informative

Thanks Big Gav. Should I be targeting the shallows up to 5 metres? Or they hit surface around deep water area too? Say the rockwall 10m+ deep.

Not to say it won’t happen.. but I would normally only be casting surface up to 4 metres deep probably less if it’s dirty water.. mulwala for instance predominantly around 3-4m deep I throw surface there 90% of the time where as if I’m in somewhere like eildon where I’m around 6-10m of water I’ll troll deeper HB or throw spinnerbaits. This is for cod I have only recently chased n caught a few bass but I found hunting them very similar to cod... but I did get a bass off the top in some open water at blue rock so who knows..

Bass will reveal their location when they start feeding on the surface cast a cicada out where they have risen and let it sit for 30sec slight twitch then sit it still again. Otherwise use a lure like a pompadour to get a reaction.

Thanks Big Gav, it's a total dark mystery for me. Had few boofs in the past but pure luck and never landed/hooked. Really want to get my first cod on surface this year.BIG GAV wrote: ↑Tue Mar 05, 2019 8:27 pmNot to say it won’t happen.. but I would normally only be casting surface up to 4 metres deep probably less if it’s dirty water.. mulwala for instance predominantly around 3-4m deep I throw surface there 90% of the time where as if I’m in somewhere like eildon where I’m around 6-10m of water I’ll troll deeper HB or throw spinnerbaits. Never thought of that, to let the bass come out first (like trout). Thanks.
