Bundalong and Mulwala

Post by Millzee » Sun Mar 04, 2018 11:35 pm

I had my boat serviced in Albury last Wednesday and made to most out of the four hour drive by fishing in the ovens on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday and then spending all day and night Friday and most of Saturday on Mulwala. It was nice exploring the Ovens around Bundaong out of the wind the first two days. When I got tired of casting lures I had a bit of a bait fish for a change and caught plenty of cod in the 45-50cm range and a couple of yellas with the best going 43.5cm. Friday I put in at DC's at about 9am and flicked lures most of the day only scoring a 50ish cod and decided to rest up by bit fishing for an hour at bout 5pm. By 6-6.30pm I'd had enough of sitting around and decided to get back flicking and while working the bank along Kiffens I heard about some campers landing a 120cm on cheese off the bank while drinking beers the lucky buggers. It got me into work mode so I set to it working lures around the area. As the sun went down and the full moon rose a spectacular sunset appeared before me and I snapped a few pics and kept at it. As darkness approached the moon kept the area well light making it nice and easy navigating the water so I could cast into the shadows of the trees with excitement as I could hear boofs coming from all around me. Between then and 2.30am my heart was racing with every cast as I had a dozen boofs at my lures but unfortunately only had two hook ups, a couple of legal size, healthy cod that went back in for me to get again net trip. After a few hours sleep I made my way back out onto the water with the thought of doing some bait fishing but after sitting for half hour I had a big hit and was broken off at my 20lb leader and had the ***** deciding to go for a troll. The weed in the lake is extremely bad at the moment, most areas I like to fish last year are almost impossible and even trolling was hell due to getting weeded up every five minutes so back to flicking lures until deciding to pack up and make the four hour drive home.
All in all, a good trip away but no monsters, next time my big fat friends, next time.

Nice little haul there, your first metre plus cod is usually the hardest to get, if you keep putting in the hours you will eventually receive, there is plenty of big cod up there, they can be real bastards at times
