You are a demon for punishment Will. When we lived in Bunyip for a couple of years when I was in high school there were plenty of good Blackfish to be had in the Bunyip River and some of the very small creeks that flowed in. The Tarago River had even larger ones. The number of eels made catching Blackfish a challenge though. Who knows these days though!

Great read, thanks for posting. Coming from up north I'm not familiar with blackfish. Are they a species which was once more common? Or are they a southern name for something which is more widespread? Cheers again.

I love your reports mate and this one is no exception.

Would you mind breaking down your blackfishing technique?

That river is certainly in good nick.

I use to catch lots off blackfish in the gelibrand river but never many over 30 cm...

I only ever fished at nigh.

Really interesting report on blackfish. Like Eug 1 I come from up north where the only fish we call blackfish are luderick.
Mr Google identifies the fish as Gadopsis marmoratus with a range extending from southern Queensland to Victoria in both the Murray Darling system and southern and eastern flowing coastal streams. I have never struck one and they may have a different common name in the northern parts of their range where they appear to be more likely to be restricted to clear upper and middle altitude streams.

There are some mighty specimens in the wilder rivers of far East Gippsland up over the 5lb mark, but the walk or kayak in is often extremely tricky to say the least. I've never tried, but have spoken to locals who have.

Brilliant report Truedogz. You're living the dream...my dream to be exact! I'd kill for a fourby so I could get to some of these remote places but years of living beyond my means have finally caught up to me and it will be a long time before I'm in a position to make any big purchases. One day! Can't wait for the next instalment.
