Re: First Murray Cod x 2
Great looking fish!
If using worms there's plenty of Maccas in the same spots. They don't often get above 2 pound but are awesome little fighters.

I thought I'd give it another go up the river at a different spot yesterday. I spent several hours without so much as a bite, enjoying the trees and the sunshine. On dusk, I was getting ready to pack it in when I heard the whir of the baitrunner on my old bream rod - picking up the rod, I was on! I could immediately tell that it was a different class of fish to my first three, taking drag and dogging it out deep on the other side of the river before doing a bee-line for a snag on my side. Stupidly I'd left the net out of range and found myself tied up between reeds and snags in no time. After a few minutes of difficulty at the edge, I had the fish within range, but without a net handy, I had to resort to a lip grip. It was a risky move, and a bad one as I found out when I couldn't lift the fish with one hand. It thrashed its head, badly cutting my thumb in the process, but worse, the fish stripped off more drag and was soon back out deep in the channel. After another few minutes of fighting it out under a log, it came free in the open and I was able to guide the fish to the bank - this time I had reached a towel and was able to lip grip the fish safely and drag in onto the bank. Incredibly, it went 80cm and an estimated 9-10kg. Having never caught one just a couple of weeks ago, this was beyond my wildest expectations. I think I'm hooked on this freshwater fishing thing. On release, the fish kicked away strongly - that splash of water in my face was strangely satisfying!

Thats just an excellent fish Bilby! A 10 kilo cod from outer Melbourne is just an awesome effort.

A couple of different spots above Heidelberg (old Mulloway fishing habits die hard!). Here's another one I caught and released this afternoon (60 cm):
And thanks for the congrats, Deathray.
