The Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish, which can grow to 6 kg, have bred in captivity for the first time - and they did it all by themselves! This threatened species can take up to 14 years to breed so are extremely susceptible to over-fishing and also habitat being degraded.

Adrian have you ever come across any of these during your many fishing trips?

Thanks for putting that up Paul, yes I have come across them in the small rivers & streams several times..
And they are big too.. very timid things, I just stand motionless as the slowly make their way past me in the shallow water.. I did get a few photos of one a few years ago, but can't find it.. I have also found and destroyed several lobster pots that morons have set in these small out of the way streams too.. The IFS have also been notified and given the areas where I have found them.. $10,000 fine for each one, not worth the risk in taking them..
They were nearly wiped out some years ago so they had to make them a protected species, not that it bothers some people that still take them..

I can remember going lobstering over 40 years ago with my dad and pop around Karoola just out of Launceston we would only take a few there were plenty around then I even got one while trout fishing it got tangled on my line trying to get the worms on the hook
