TRUE TALES OF THE TROUT COD

Post by Paulanderson » Mon Jul 31, 2017 3:14 am

I read parts of True Tales of the Trout Cod again. You can find it at -

http://truetales.com.au/publications/bo ... d_book.pdf

The interviews, stories and photographs from the early days are something else and the evidence is clearly there as to much of what happened with our native fisheries. It is easy to look back to the earlier years and say some of what happened should not have but at that time many people, particularly those in authority, had no idea what the impacts would be. For example de-snagging rivers, widespread introduction of exotic species, siltation, pollution from gold mining, barriers such as dams, cold water outflows and so on decimated native fish populations. If you look at photograph 8.2 there is a catch of 60 plus Macquarie Perch and this photo was taken after many had been given away This was from the original Eildon Weir when such catches were nothing exceptional and a catch of 40 was considered poor. Once Redfin populated the weir though that was it for the Maccas.

On the plus side it is good to see that efforts are now being made to improve fish habitat and water quality, reduce the number of barriers, and large scale re-stocking of species such as Murray Cod and Trout Cod are having an impact. Time will tell!

Looked over the PDF file, it's huge. Some great catches, even some nice Cod from lake Nagambie. People in those days commonly caught their limit & not limit the catch, thanks for sharing.

I started reading this morning and was nearly late for work, definitely looking forward to a read and look at all the pics, caught a nice little Trout Cod casting the other day, about 50 cm biggest I have ever caught, the lure was a stump jumper which I found dangling off a snag, it had a Trout Cod looking pattern and colour scheme, tied in on and 5 minutes later I caught the fish, Did'nt even take him out the water, I forgot how beautiful Trout Cod are in person.
