Hi All,
A well known tackle shop owner said its not worth using cheese for Cod at Eildon due to the fact there are not many Shrimp in the Lake.
Wondering what are other Members thoughts on this comment.

There are a couple of theories on why cheese works for cod. What ol mate was referring to is that one of the theories is that the shrimp get attracted to the cheese and the cod are eating the shrimp, not the cheese itself. Another theory though is that its the fats and oils ommitted from the cheese that attracts the cod. Chop/steak fat and sausages and bacon rind can also work. A squirt of wd40 or diesel on baits has also been known to work.
Personally though, I'd be using yabbies. Too many small reddies about (under 25cms) to be using worms atm.

Yeah I don't go with the shrimp on cheese theory as I can catch cod with cheese where I don't get shrimp, cheers davo

Yep I agree, also never caught yellow belly on cheese, who also enjoy shrimp

My unknowledgable opinion on using cheese (based on a recent first experience using it) seemed to indicate that the shrimp theory wasn't the definitive reason as to why it works - being that the cheese wouldn't have been in the water long enough to gather a population of shrimp that would be appetising to fish - I was getting interest within minutes of it hitting the water.

I'd say it would be worth a try. Interested to know other people's experience using it - davek has already disproven the shrimp attracting theory to a degree + redhunters feedback as well.

I would say any shrimp attracted to the cheese just provides added attractant, so it is a helping factor rather than a definitive factor.

cheese def works for me at Kerang Vic on Yellow Belly.
Locals up their swore by it and laughed at the thought of me bringing a tackle box full of lures. To my surprise we landed a few huge fish.
My personal opinion would be it omitting fats and oils that attract life to it.
I was also told to specifically get Coon tasty cheese and had to be the cubes in a pack.
