lake hume

Post by DougieK » Thu Dec 27, 2012 9:10 pm

So after a couple of days getting drunk with the unless managed to sneak away for a look at some promising spots. Went on foot from the tourist park and found a spot where you could clearly see some rises. Ode.tidied what I'm sure was a rainbow hitting surface bugs and then what I thought was a pair of carp and turned our to be two freshwater turtles. . I only had half an hour so I didn't take my rod with me but I'm set up and ready to go in ether morning before the speed boats d jet skis start roaring around.d.

First time I've ever seen a wild turtle, I rank it up there with the platypus as my best finds.

Couple of reddies this morning. Trick seems to be throwing a lure around until you see one jump then trying to hit it on the head. using a size two Tassy devil brown trout pattern.

I'm noticing quite often I getting follow ups but not strikes, any advice on how to get a reddy to take a lure in the last 5 metres of retrieve?

If you got a floating lure or one that will suspend in the water try a stop start retrieve fish might strike when the lure stops swimming.

Everyone says this and I assumed it to be true. However, with trout I have found that when I do this and stop the lure they lose interest immediately and swim away. Several times I have noticed this without hooking one of them by stop/starting the lure. Perhaps one method is to retrieve faster to make the fish think its prey is trying to escape. Honestly this will be difficult as you will be near the end of your retrieve.
thanks

I'll give both a go tomorrow, I'm finding I need to use heavier lures because these things are jumping just out if my cast range. Nit sure if I have something that wool float or suspend and also make it out far enough but d will see

Nothing fir an hour then 5 reddies in 12 casts today. One more tiny one about twenty minutes later. The smallest being barely bigger than the Size two brown Trout tassie devil that I've now caught eight fish on :)

Going to cruise down a river today out tomorrow and try and hook something more interesting.

Also two of those five were within about the metres if my feet, just gave the tip a little tweak then speed the retrieve for s moment and the things basically jumped into my lap. While I understand the frustrations of experienced anglers with regis they are a great kids fish because they seen to eat pretty much everything.
