Daylesford Lake report.
Had a picnic with my partner and our daughter for the day off today at Daylesford lake, took a rod along in the hope I could find a bit of time for a fish. We settled next to the public BBQs just by the entrance when you head in from town. I thought I’d set up the rod holder and drown some worms so that I could still play with my daughter. Casted out near a bit of structure on the edge and left it for 10 or 15 minutes, no bites. Thought I’d try casting straight out in front of me and right away had a few nibbles. Pulled in three small reddies, a fish a cast, so I knew it was worth sticking at it to see if I could get onto a decent one. By this stage the 3 or 4 others that were flicking soft plastics started to edge in a bit closer to me, which was no worry as they were all respectful and left me my space. I cast back out and got a big hit and a quick hook up and I could tell straight away that this was a better fish. The fish put up a pretty solid fight with one good final run towards some structure but I turned him and got him in the net. Pretty solid 34cm reddie, just shy of 1.5 pounds. I baited up again and cast out and left it in so I could sit down for lunch, sure enough after 5 minutes more bites but this one spat the hook, felt like a decent fish. Over the next 10 or 15 minutes I got a few more small ones stealing the bait so I thought I’d give it a rest as it was my day to spend time with the family, and my partner was pretty pleased about the one we were taking home for dinner already. It was a good, fun and very short session, having only had a line in for about 40 minutes all up. No one using plastics caught anything in the time I was there, good day for the humble garden worm.
