After harvesting grapes for a few days being a glutton for punishment I did a lot of walking and bush bashing chasing cod on the surface last night.

The first four cod I caught during daylight, three of them from the log in the picture. At this stage of the season the cod become lure shy so I used a change of tack - I downsized to small, subtle surface lures during the day and it worked a treat. The lure I was using was a 3 inch surface chopper. Three small cod from that log and two others dropped. I suspect they were waiting for crickets. I had a few other hits and then landed the nice one in the next pic.

Evidence of the fish being hook shy came from two fish that nudged the larger lure I was initially using, tossing it slightly into the air. So don't be afraid to use smaller surface lures if the water isn't real deep.

After dark I reverted to larger lures and landed another nine cod. 6 trout cod in total, including a couple of good ones, and 7 Murray cod. The Murray cod were a great average size, mostly 55 to 65 cm.

The moon came up and within an hour the cod completely shut down - I only got a few hessitent boofs at dawn. When the moon runs low across the sky casting long shadows the cod can bite quite well in clearer water in moonlight. If overhead it can shut things right down like last night.

I had a great night, though after all the walking this week I have really suffered with leg cramps today. I never get tired of fishing under the stars, particularly when boofing cod. Two more and it will be 50 off the top for the season.

Best Wishes

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
