Two Nights Chasing Cod
Davo and I went fishing for a couple of nights with a focus of getting them off the top. Any session where you nail one off the top is a good one and I consider 5 in a night a great result.
We went out Sunday arvo and Davo fairly quickly picked up a small trout cod on cheese, but things were quiet. After dark Davo got 4 nice cod off the top, including one about 60 and another in the 50s, two in the 40s, dropped one fish and had a few other boofs - the last one attacked the lure many times until it got pinned. I picked up a trout cod and a Murray cod in the mid 40s and a 'mongrel' cod (hybrid Murray x trout cod) about 40 cm, and hooked a couple of others that got off. I brought to the bank a really nice cod well over 60 which while as I was getting the lip grips out did a death roll and spat the hooks.
Here is a pic of the mongrel cod:
During the night the change in weather blew in and the fish shut down. Next day was really tough. Davo got a small trouty on cheese, I got a 30 cm trouty on the surface. We've been spoilt some nights, I've twice got 10 and Dave's best is 5. There were very few boofs last night and it was clear the cod weren't interested - it just illustrates the impact a change in weather can have. A very good night on Sunday, a bummer last night, but as I said we've had a great season off the top - lets see how we go on the cod trip!
Best Wishes

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish

What a life  good one.
What type of cheese do you use? I've never tried cheese as bait or ever fished for cod. Should give it a go.

Any cheese really, I use Mozzarella because it doesn't break up much and I use a bait sock. A lot of people just use BBQ cheese cubes, cheers davoBrownie wrote:What a life  good one.

Re: Two Nights Chasing Cod
Hi Will the hybrid Murray/Trout Cod you mentioned - would that likely have been stocked that way or does that mean the Murray and Trout Cod are actually inter-breeding in the river where you were fishing?
