Truedogz and myself headed out last night to fish a section of the Goulburn River near home. The plan was to walk downstream around 1-1.5klm and fish a sandbar with bait and switch to surface lures on dark. the river was running higher than it was when I was out there a couple of weeks ago and the wind and lightening made it interesting. I picked up a small Trout Cod, a lower 30cm model and not long after a 40cm model Murray cod, both on cheese. Will was using worms and was kept busy by little bait stealing Silver Perch or Trout Cod that just wouldn't hook up. The switch to surface lures didn't bring us anything with Will the only one to entice a "boof" from a Cod but no hook up. We fished some pretty positive snags, What can I say, the high river, the lightening storm, they just didn't want to play. This last pic is Truedogz leading the way through the scrub,

Almost a fail there - more seriously with a storm around the fish usually bite. Perhaps the higher water level had something to do with it?

I wonder how a rolled up cheese slice with a couple of hooks in it would go as a lure? :super:

Paul, I reckon the higher water level was a big factor. There was also a lot of lightning around - it was pretty wild for a while. We definitely would have caught more if we kept bait fishing but we made the decision to use surface lures - which I don't regret as if they are on the go it is so much more fun. I'd rather have a good boof that doesn't hook up than catch a few tiddlers.

I'm glad that Dave put in a report as it is important for the less experienced anglers to realise that not every trip is brilliant. I think I read recently on Robbie Alexander's Facebook page that he recently fished 4 nights without landing any cod - and he fishes in what I consider to be the most reliable cod waters in the state. I've just had a month of brilliant fishing and a few doughnuts along the way doesn't phase me. If you don't take risks you don't learn and grow :thumbsup: .
