Peechelba
Last week I planned to chase blackfish in Gippsland but the high temperatures scared me off and I went up to the high country chasing trout. This week I again aborted my blackfish trip due to the showers in Gippsland which bring out the leeches in some of my blackie spots.
So I headed north and chased cod for three days at three spots I hadn't fished before. People ask me for locations to catch cod. Well just do what I do, use google earth and check out the spots! I am going to put in three reports because the spots and fishing were quite different.
I tried a new location on the Ovens near Peechelba. Bank fishing is limited due to steep cliffs. Some big fish live there because at this spot I got boofed on the surface by a cod that would have been over a metre long - I got a good look at the fish:
The sound it made was amazing - like a jet flying over followed by a splash like somebody threw a brick in the water. It obviously wasn't interested in eating the big lure I was using just scaring it off. I saw it come up, turn and slap the lure with its tail! I cast at the same spot for a while with no response. I didn't want to stay late there as the forest is dense with a maze of lagoons and I was worried about getting back to the truck which was a fair way up the river. Was I pissed off not catching him? Not really it was a privilege witnessing the boof which echoed right up the river. Anyhow I plan to go back there better prepared and fish into the night.
Next morning I did a bit of bait fishing catch four cod from 35 to 55 cm long:
Then I packed up camp to try further up the river.
Third time lucky maybe next week I will get out chasing blackfish!
Best Wishes

Another good report Will, nice cod, cheers davo :a_goodjob:
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Looks like an amazing spot! It's so rewarding when you scout out a new fishing location and achieve a capture - great work.
