Re: Fresh water crays
I am not that experienced with them but I know they are popular to eat! They also come with a closed season as well so that is the first thing you need to check. Forum member drew 2 should come to your rescue here with general info!

I've been pulling up a lot of late as they steal my bait, yes their good eating, and yes i'ts closed season, cheers davo.
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Re: Fresh water crays
I'm pretty sure the closed season is only for waters north of the divide for spiny crayfish, none for south,so depends on where you are going.

Re: Fresh water crays
Correct Drew, North of the divide, it's a closed season during any month with an R in it.
How ever you can still catch them Sth of the divide. If unsure check the guide

Re: Fresh water crays
Good fishing in the Latrobe system but they drop off October and if you do get some the flesh can get a bit milky.
July - Late September is the best. Eating is great, pop a couple of garlic cloves in salted water and boil 10-15 min until tail breaks away from carapice(body). Best chilled down as they are or can be fleshed out into pasta. Not bad cooked on BBQ either with Asian based marinade.
