Nagambie Report
I've been flat out for months and haven't really wet a line until this evening. So I'll put in a few local reports of how things have been going up this way. A friend fished with cheese and worms a week ago at the Mitchellstown bridge without getting a bite. But the warmer weather since seems to have started the fish moving. The lady in the tackle store told me that the local kids have caught reddies and yellas in the lake right in town the last few days.
On the spur of the moment I headed down to the Goulburn between Nagambie and Murchison to de-stress for a couple of hours. I didn't take any cheese or lures as I didn't want to target the better sized cod which will be breeding at the moment. So I took down a few worms to see what tiddlers were around and do some 'grandad' fishing with some of the vintage tackle.
First the spot all set up; cane rods, Mitchell and Crouch reels: 11 trout cod landed:
5 Murray cod: 5 golden perch: The pictures are of pretty typical sized fish, though some of the trouties were smaller. I stopped taking pics as I ended up too busy.
Numerous 'cockatoo perch' were hooked and a few landed.
Anyhow, 21 fish in two and a bit hours is pretty entertaining fishing, even if they weren't big.
Best Wishes

Great report mate & love seeing the old gear still catching fish  Maybe some of the wankers on here who think you need a $1000k reel to catch a fish should take note

Love the clarity of the water.
Hopefully we keep getting consistent top up rain to keep the farmers happy and the ground moist so that the Goulburn stays nice and low. Too many great options for freshwater native fishing at the moment.
Thanks for posting Truedogz.

Re: Nagambie Report
Great report td. I'd like to think trout cod are making a somewhat of a comeback despite the general lack of improvement in river health. Are they likely to have been stocked or naturally recruiting?

Good report Truedogz, we will get out for a fish soon, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Re: Nagambie Report
Thanks gents.
The old gear works very well.
The Mitchell 300 set the standard for spinning reels in its day. The only mods I have made to it are the bail from a slightly later model with a roller and modern washers to make the drag silky. It has a lower gear ratio than many modern eggbeaters making it perfect for very slower retrieves with lures.
The crouch is the more modern version with the plastic slides. I use it for the heavier lines as I can set the drag at the 'come here you bast*** position' when the snags are bad. I use the older aluminium version for lighter line fishing - it is just a superb quality reel to use, real craftmanship.
Deathray, the trouties downstream of the Goulburn Weir are breeding naturally, not stocked. Same in the Ovens. In the Murray between Yarrawonga and Barmah surveys indicate they make up between one third and two thirds of the entire fish population!!! Unfortunately, we are never going to be allowed to target them in rivers due to green ideology - a great pity as they are one of our best sportfish.
Dave we will get out for a fish, and Jim too, I've just had a lot else on. About to start a new career.
I hope to call in at the Doon sometime next weekend to meet some of you guys.
By the way, I threw the line in again late this arvo upstream of Mitchellstown .... I better start another thread!
