CAMPING BETWEEN MURCHISON AND SHEPPARTON

Post by coln72 » Wed Apr 20, 2016 4:41 pm

Hi all,
My wife is running a canoe camp for school. Usually she uses the Murray River for this, but due to the algae outbrake this is out of the question.
Another option is the Goulburn River between Murchison and Shepparton. Unfortunately, we are not in the position to do a proper recon - ie. canoe the river ourselves before hand :( so I am asking if anyone knows of some camp areas suitable for 20-30 students that have reasonable access to the river for canoes.

Any help would be great

Davek lives in Nagambie and I'm sure he can point you in the right direction for some good spots.

Plenty of camping areas out of Murchison or Toolamba.

Google search the area and check out the camp sites/ sandbars on the satellite maps, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Toolamba has a scout camp on the river surrounded by plenty of random spots to the left and right, enter park via Moira Drive, Kialla West and head straight-leftish (main track to us bcoz we usually head that direction every time lol). Can be busy if hippy fest is on.
Sorry if the pic is too big, on my phone.

Another option is Union Rd West, just before you get into Kialla West township if coming from Melbourne. Follow to the bend and take the first right (Bridge Rd) and over the bridge. Not far past the bridge is a cattle grid on your right, head in there & (think its before the 2nd cattle grid) it brings you near a pump-house with plenty of space to drop in canoes. Unsure of water level to bank and possibility of weed being overgrown, depends how much it was used for camping recently.

Last few times we have camped at the back of the Murchison Footy oval, nice sandy banks & easy access but can get busy on weekends with campers/holidayers depending when you go.

Footy oval at Murch would be fine during the week. Plenty of space and really good launching area.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looking at camping at the Toolamba rail bridge. Apparently there is a place to camp near there. Hope to check the area out next week. Just have to hide my rods in the car ;)

Checked out the area Tuesday. A big thanks to the Toolambo Fishing Club for allowing the school group to use their facilities next week  and the area across the road to camp in.

Unfortunately no fish - just a number of lost lures :( between myself and my son.
