Cup day and Day after cup day 2015

We're going to Bonnie Doon, we're going to Bonnie Doon!
Cup day means that me and a mate make the trek to Bonnie Doon.
This year we decided to stay over night which was a great choice.

Left home at 5am on cup day for the 2 hour drive to Bonnie Doon, by the time we hit the water it was around 7.15am.

There were a few that had beaten us out, Felt like I had slept in.

As we were about to head off two fishery officers turned up. Quick license check (a first for me), a thankyou for the work they do and we were off.

Headed to Delatite Arm as we had heard that was where to head.
Day one was filled with lots of casting, tolling and flicking SPs.
The result was one carp caught by my mate!!!!!!!!! Caught it on a Jackal Brown Dog. I have never seen a carp taken on a lure before.
So day one was a doughnut for me. I could not believe as had heard of good reports of late.

Headed to setup camp at 5pm. Tired and frustrated.

Day two
up at 5am packed up camp and hit the water by 6am

3rd Cast and Bang! Hooked something big. Using SPs I only had 8lb line and I knew I was in trouble.
You know that moment when you think "what the heck have you done" moment. This fish was way out gunning me. My poor little Soft Plastic rod was creaking and bent at almost 180 degrees. But in the end I won and a 59cm Yella was netted.

These fish are amazing to fight on light gear. But 8lb was a tad too light I was beginning to think. Too big to eat. she was safely returned.
From that moment on we had hit after hit for the next couple of hours.
The tails on these yella's are huge makes them go hard.

Found the best way to get them was to "slow roll" Gulp 3 inch curly tail grubs on a 1/4oz jig head around the trees.
These one here

We managed 3 reddies for the day as well.

Total for the day
13 yellas from 46cms to 59cms
3 reddies.

Fishing is strange, one day one carp, the next day one of the best days of freshwater fishing I have ever had.

Cheers
Jed

Solid yellowbelly Jed. that reddie looks yellower than the yellas

8lb line is theoretically ok given that the yellas you're chasing are probably 6lb max. But the problem is where they live aren't so friendly to 8lb line. 8lb braid would be ok, but not mono. Would have been awesome getting 13 yellas in a session! Did you get them all off the one tree? Was there land based grandfinal weekend listening to the mighty hawks threepeat and managed to land a 45cm yella off the bank near the ramp at the caravan park on a yabby.

Thanks for the report Jed, hopefully, the rain will clear enough for us to get onto Yella's like yours, Reddies are a bonus all nice fish, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Cup day was very busy on the water, jet skis, skiers, 10000000 fishermen. I think that did not help them in wanting to bite

yesterday was when we got on to them and there was only us and two other boats that I saw out there.
