Mildura and merbein area

Post by malleestump » Mon Jun 18, 2012 12:29 pm

Arrived in Mildura for the weekend for a social visit no fishing allowed. Not to worry talking to local anglers the colder weather has dropped the fish’s metabolism and they are not moving or biting. The shrimp are virtually no existent and it won’t be till about September until the natives start to move around and take bait or lure. Mildura area has seen the re-emergence of catfish and there has been a lot caught over summer. They are a great fighting fish and must be handled carefully because they have a spike on the back that can cause some pain handled the wrong way. Anglers that know use a pair of side cutters to cut this before removing the hook. These fish cannot be kept and must be returned. Catfish numbers were depleted with the introduction of European carp. They will again have to battle to survive again know that the carp are in abundance again after the latest floods. The fish that can be caught in this area are –Murray cod, yellow belly ,silver perch, redfin, Catfish, and carp.
Post up some shots of the river soon

Sad to see the damage caused by floods on this wonderful area, we used to go there once every winter to enjoy the wormer weather and to catch some from the Murry, hopefully it get back to its norm soon.

Andoki The water level is back to normal levels; water still a bit cloudy at present though. Most of the high flood water has past through. At Wentworth weir the Darling is still flowing and is being released downstream for the SA irrigators.

It does the Murray a world of good if it floods, yrs ago when it was allowed to flood on a regular basis, it was a lot more productive.

That's correct Brett,Murray Cod love to get out into the trees and breed IE the Barmah forest is ideal for this. Then when a natural flood raises the water levels to spill over the banks then brerding happens right along the Murray.Just another snippet on the Height the Murray can reach was the 1956 floods when the water levels surrounded Mildura < Merbein and Wentworth.Where I took these photo's we drove over the levee banks that were built for that flood .They could be 3 to 4 metres higher than what the river is at present .
