Sounds like they was using the floating pole method for fishing stillwatwers, it can be very effective.

Here is a link for fishing for carp and roach etc. I know its from the UK (sorry YUK) but the tactics work well here. To be honest my fav has always been the lift method. But it explains the floating pole they were prob using.
